Research Program
NWRI is an independent leader on funding research focused on water, wastewater, and water resources, including urban watershed issues. Our research program supports multi-disciplinary, multi-geographic projects throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Research Goals
The goals of our research program include:
- Identify research needs relating to water science and policy issues.
- Build collaborative partnerships to develop and support water research.
- Provide opportunities for the water community to meet and discuss significant issues.
- Encourage the general public to recognize the need for water research.
Research Interests
There are four key areas of research that we support:
- Water Quality Assessment: Projects focus on treatment processes, including the lifecycle of product waters, biological and chemical contaminants, tracking, development of devices to monitor quality, and associated security issues.
- Treatment and Monitoring: Projects focus on (1) water and wastewater treatment and management, or (2) future directions for the development of community water supplies and wastewater systems.
- Knowledge Management: Projects designed to gather, translate, and distribute/incorporate water-science information to better understand and employ water development, management, and protection efforts and decision-making processes.
- Exploratory Research: Projects focus on new concepts for creative, non-traditional approaches to advance the water industry.
Research Results
To date, NWRI has invested over $17 million in research funding. The following achievements have resulted from these efforts:
- Coordinated over 100 multi-agency collaborations.
- Published over 130 peer-reviewed technical publications.
- Created over 170 conference presentations.
- Supported over 30 graduate students.
